Mimika Named Best in Papua Land, Ministry of Home Affairs Appreciates Success in Reducing Poverty Rate
BERITATOP - The Mimika Regency Government has once again achieved a proud accomplishment at the Papua level. Thanks to its success in consistently reducing poverty through various measurable and targeted programs, the Mimika Regency Government successfully received the Best I Award in the Poverty Alleviation and Reduction Category for Regencies throughout Papua in 2026.
The award was presented directly to the Regent of Mimika, Johannes Rettob, at the Appreciation Night for Accomplished Regional Governments throughout Papua in 2026, which took place in Jayapura on Monday night (22/6/2026).
The Ministry of Home Affairs (Kemendagri) assessed that the development governance implemented by the Mimika Regency Government was able to effectively integrate social protection programs with community economic empowerment. This approach was deemed successful in improving citizen welfare while significantly reducing poverty.
Not only that, Mimika also succeeded in winning the Best I Award in the Creative Financing Category for regencies in the Papua region. This award is proof of the regional government's success in optimizing various financing sources to support development and social programs.
Based on data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) sourced from the National Socio-Economic Survey (Susenas), the percentage of the poor population in Mimika Regency in March 2025 was recorded at 13.70 percent, or around 31.31 thousand people.
This figure shows a decrease of 0.48 percent compared to the previous year. In 2024, the poverty rate in Mimika was still at 14.18 percent, with the number of poor people reaching 32,090.
A decrease of nearly a thousand poor people in one year indicates that various development programs and regional fiscal policies are running effectively. Inclusive development strategies and the utilization of creative financing are considered capable of driving the community's economic sector productively.
Responding to the award received, the Regent of Mimika, Johannes Rettob, expressed his appreciation to all government apparatus and the community who have collaborated to support various regional development programs.
"This award is the result of hard work together. The Mimika Regency Government is committed to continuing to eradicate poverty and aggressively targeting extreme poverty to be 0 percent," stated Johannes Rettob.
According to him, this target will be achieved through strengthening poverty data validation, expanding employment opportunities, and optimizing various creative financing instruments that have received recognition from the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Going forward, the Mimika Regency Government is committed to continuing to accelerate development oriented towards improving the overall welfare of the community, so that the benefits of development can be felt down to the lowest strata of society.
